Atlas Mountains day trips with kids: how much walking is really involved?

Updated September 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Berber village of ochre houses on a terraced slope in the High Atlas

“Atlas Mountains hike” doesn’t describe one day, but an entire family of very different days. Some trips walk for two to three hours on uneven trails, others include an optional thirty-minute stroll and spend the rest of the time at the table and in the minibus. For parents, the difference decides everything, and it shows up neither in the photo nor in the title.

We read the booking pages of the most-reviewed mountain excursions on GetYourGuide. This guide covers the day trips to Imlil, Asni and the neighbouring valleys. For the Ourika valley, which follows a different logic, we have a separate article: Ourika with kids.

Nine hours, nearly three of them in the minibus

The most-reviewed offer among these mountain excursions is the Atlas Mountains full-day hiking trip with lunch: €21 per person, 8,246 reviews, 4.8 out of 5, nine hours advertised.

The itinerary published on the operator’s page breaks it down: about 80 minutes by minibus on the way there, an optional 45-minute stop in the Agafay desert with a camel ride, a 15-minute photo stop at Moulay Brahim, 30 minutes in Imlil, then 2 hours 30 of tea and walking, and 75 minutes for lunch.

Add it up before you book, not after. For a six-year-old, the question isn’t “is the mountain beautiful”, but “how long sitting in a moving vehicle”. The group is capped at 15 participants according to the page, which means a minibus, not a coach: less waiting at stops, but also less room to move.

The walk can be shortened, and it says so

This is the point I take away for families, because it’s rare for an operator to spell it out this clearly. The “good to know” section of that page states that average fitness is needed for the two-to-three-hour walk, that the trails are marked but can be uneven and uphill — and that the number of walking hours can be extended or shortened, with the walk cancelled for anyone who can’t walk, who is then driven to viewpoints instead.

That sentence turns a hike into a negotiable day. It doesn’t negotiate itself, though: flag it beforehand, not at the foot of the trail. Ask who accompanies the part of the group that isn’t walking, and where everyone meets up again. A guide can’t be in two places, and nothing on this page promises a second escort.

It also doesn’t guarantee an earlier return to Marrakesh. Skipping the walk usually means waiting for the rest of the group elsewhere, not going home sooner. If your afternoon is already booked, it’s the full nine-hour duration that counts, not the length of the walk.

The meal, the camel, and what to flag in advance

The traditional Berber lunch is presented as included and prepared on site; vegetarian options are available, and the page asks you to flag special diets or allergies in advance. Do it in writing at the time of booking, and don’t treat a general mention as an answer to a specific allergy. For any medical or dietary question, your pharmacy or your paediatrician remains the right contact, not a booking page.

The camel ride is optional and lasts about 20 to 25 minutes according to the same page, with Berber clothing provided. That’s short. If it’s the main reason your child is coming along, say so: a family that comes for the camel and leaves after nine hours in the mountains may have picked the wrong excursion.

The neighbouring offers aren’t equal for a family

The Atlas Mountains and 5 valleys excursion, €62.10 and 2,314 reviews, advertises eight hours and lists only a 30-minute optional stroll, with lunch in a Berber family house and tea by the river. For young children, this format asks for noticeably less legwork.

The offer Atlas, camel, waterfalls and lunch, €23.69 and 1,397 reviews, states that lunch is in a Berber house depending on the option chosen — so check it after selecting, not from the title.

Both of these pages state that they aren’t suitable for people with reduced mobility. That’s the operator’s note about its route, not a judgement on your family; but if you’re pushing a buggy or travelling with a grandparent who walks with difficulty, take it seriously and ask for details on the ground and the steps.

Two categories stand apart. Mount Tedli at 2,600 metres (€38.21) is a day of hiking, not a stroll. And the two-day Toubkal treks, around €100 and listed among our Toubkal treks, are a light mountaineering project with a night in a refuge: not a family outing to decide on the night before.

No minimum age is stated — what that changes

On the pages we read for these mountain excursions, no minimum age is published. That doesn’t mean “all ages are suitable”: it means that the limit, if there is one, has to be asked of the operator before payment, and that we can’t invent one. Also ask about the child rate, which only appears once you’ve chosen a date.

The budget then has to be worked out in full: €19.60 multiplied by two adults comes to €39.20, by four people €78.40, excluding options and tips. The 52 Atlas offers on GetYourGuide start at €7.26 with a median of €21, which gives an idea of the range, not of your bill.

When I wouldn’t book

With a child who refuses to walk for two hours over uneven ground, I’d choose a short offer rather than a long one with the hope of cutting it short on the day. If someone in the family copes badly with mountain roads, talk about it beforehand: the hairpin bends are real, and the remedy is a matter for a pharmacy, not for us. And if your day needs to end early, the right question to ask the operator is the return time to Marrakesh, not the length of the hike. The rest of the options are covered in our Atlas Mountains day trips.
