Rental car in Marrakesh: do you really need one?

Updated October 14, 2026 · 6 min read

For Marrakesh itself, the answer is no. For most stays, take a private transfer between Menara airport and your hotel or riad (€7.49 per person, 4.7 out of 5 from 6,916 reviews), then book your outings as excursions: no parking to hunt for, no road to read. A car only becomes interesting if you want to string together several trips outside the city at your own pace, and even then the guided excursions in the region are so cheap that they often win on price.

In the medina, a car is no use

The old city is what you came to see, and it is where a car is least useful. The transfer listings say so themselves: some riads in the medina cannot be reached by vehicle, and the driver then drops you at the nearest point, from where you should allow about five to ten minutes’ walk with your luggage. If you stay in the medina, a car does not bring you any closer to your door.

If you stay in a hotel in the modern city, the question shifts a little, but not its answer: the palaces, the souks and the gardens are visited on foot or by taxi, and looking for a space takes longer than the journey. Our guide to what to see in Marrakesh brings these visits together.

The alternatives, with their prices

We quote no rental prices: they vary with the season, the rental company and the category, and an out-of-date figure would cost you money. For the alternatives, here are the starting prices per person shown on GetYourGuide.

These three excursions for two people each stay under €100 at the starting price: Essaouira, Ourika and Ouarzazate. At that price, a rental has to offer something other than savings, which means freedom.

When a car makes sense

It does if you want to stop where you like, head back when it suits you and depend on no group. That is the case for those planning several outings on different days, or travelling with children whose schedules do not fit a group departure. If so, ask the rental company whether it provides a child seat: not all do. To compare rental companies for your dates, you can compare rental cars in Marrakesh on Discover Cars.

Before you book, read our article on the excess, the deposit and what gets added at the desk: that is where the money is decided. And if your plan is the coast, look first at the route from Marrakesh to Essaouira by rental car.

When it doesn’t

It doesn’t if you have no licence, if you dislike driving in unfamiliar traffic, or if you are only making a single excursion. In those three cases, the transfer and the guided day are simpler. An excursion to Ourika with a lunch option spares you the desk, the deposit and the road: €13.28 per person, 6.5 hours advertised.

Nor does it make sense for a one-day stopover: a single day on site justifies neither the pick-up nor the security deposit.

Our recommendation

For most travellers, no car: take the private transfer from the airport on arrival, walk around the medina, and book two or three excursions, for example the day in Essaouira at €13.36 or the excursion to Ourika at €13.17. You keep your evenings and you sign no rental contract.

Rent only if you want to drive for the pleasure of it and you are staying several days. Note that, for departing flights, the €7.16 transfer offer sets the pick-up generally three hours before take-off: that is the operator’s timing, not ours. The excursions to Essaouira and the excursions to the Atlas and Ourika gather the rest of the departures.
